Become a Tutor or Trainer
Delivering Makaton curriculum workshops is rewarding. If you are considering how you can further help your communities embed Makaton, consider becoming a Tutor or Trainer based on the role and criteria below.

Makaton Tutors
Completing the Makaton Tutor Training programme will earn you the title of Licensed Makaton Tutor. Once licensed, a Tutor can:
- Deliver Levels 1–4 Workshops
- Access and deliver additional specialised courses* such as:
- Taster Sessions - short introductory sessions focused on topics
- Makaton For... Workshops offering business specific content for sectors such as Learning Disability Teams, Nursing, Dentistry, Early Years Settings and Emergency Services.
- Safeguarding essential vocabulary when working vulnerable people.
- Know & Grow Christian community specific vocabulary.
Licensed Tutors are permitted to deliver workshops in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) to the general public and workplaces, including their own. This makes the Tutor route the most flexible and wide-reaching option for those who wish to do a little or a lot of training in their communities.
Tutors are also there to support communities, meeting with local schools and support organisations offering signposting to workshops and offering 121 experience.
*additional courses may require purchase or further training in addition to initial Tutor Training.
Makaton Trainers
Trainers are workplace based individuals that may deliver a topic-specific course, relevant to said workplace, to their colleagues which benefits their roles at work. Makaton Trainers are licenced to deliver this one topic only.
- Trainers may only deliver the topic they trained in
- Delivery is restricted to their own place of work and not the general public
- Trainers cannot deliver Levels 1–4 or additional/bespoke workshops
- Trainers are not licensed to deliver in external settings or to other organisations
This route is ideal for internal training needs within a single organisation or service area with high turnover or a large pool of staff.
We currently offer Training Licences for:
- Early Year Settings – such as nursery practitioners
- General Wellbeing – such as mental health organisations and care spaces
- Urgent & Emergency Care – for medical teams such as A&E staff or paramedics
- Nursing/District Nursing – for nurse teams in medical environments
- Dentistry – for dentists and dental nurses
- Emergency Services – for emergency first responders
If you are unsure which Trainer route is right for you, a member of our support team will be able to help.
