The Level 1 - Level 4 Workshops form the current Core Makaton training pathway, replacing the previous Beginners and Follow-Up or Foundation and Enhancement workshops.

The workshops for Levels 1-4 include a number of updates including some new signs and symbols and are now delivered as one-day (or two half-day) workshops, making Makaton training more flexible and accessible.  We've also removed the distinction between pathways for "professionals" and parents/carers so that there's one training programme for everyone.

Workshop content and equivalents:
  • Level 1 Workshop = stages 1-2 of the Core Vocabulary; equivalent to day ONE/modules 1 & 2 of the previous Beginners or Foundation Workshops.
  • Level 2 Workshop = stages 3-4 of the Core Vocabulary; equivalent to day TWO/modules 3 & 4 of the Beginners or Foundation Workshops.
  • Level 3 Workshop = stages 5-6 of the Core Vocabulary; equivalent to day ONE of the previous Follow-Up or Enhancement Workshops.
  • Level 4 Workshop = stages 7-8 of the Core Vocabulary; equivalent to day TWO of the Follow-Up or Enhancement Workshops.
Some learners who haven't trained for several years choose to start again at Level 1 to refresh and update their knowledge and skills, but if you've already completed one or more Level and you're confident with your sign and symbol use and feel ready to progress then you can go straight to the next Level.

You will need to show a certificate or other evidence of your previous training when booking anything above Level 1, and all applicants for Makaton Tutor or Trainer training need to have attended workshop training in the last 5 years.  If you don't have anything to evidence your prior learning and/or you are considering Tutor Training in future, you will need to start with Level 1 again now.
