Guidance taken from the Tutor Operations Manual
As a Tutor or Trainer, you must hold a valid barring disclosure certificate relevant to where you deliver services.
DBS
You will need a basic, standard or enhanced DBS based on the work you do.
To find out which one you need, you can look at this handy flow chart here.
To apply, read the .gov guidance here.
Self-employed individuals cannot apply for a Standard or Enhanced check by
themselves and should be either represented by their employer/contractor or apply
via an umbrella body.
For this reason, most individuals only need a basic check unless working directly with vulnerable groups or need a level of check required by the organisation or client.
PVG
This is for joining the PVG scheme and existing PVG members who want to
work with a new vulnerable group i.e. your membership is for children,
but you move to a role working with protected adults too.
This is for self-employed people joining the PVG scheme, or self-
employed PVG members who want to work with a new vulnerable group.
Access NI
These checks work the same as DBS whereby there are basic, standard
and enhanced checks.
You can read about the different types of checks below, but to work with
vulnerable children or adults in those settings, and Enhanced DBS is
required
